Last night, I had the privilege of chatting with Rechelle Hawkes AM, a true icon in the world of sports leadership. As an Olympian and one of only two Australian women to win Olympic gold medals at three separate Games, Rechelle’s insights were nothing short of inspiring.
Rechelle Hawkes is renowned not just for her athletic prowess but for her exceptional leadership as the captain of the Hockeyroos, Australia’s female hockey team, from 1993 to 2000. During her tenure, the team lost only one international tournament, a testament to her remarkable leadership skills.
One of this country’s greatest elite athletes, Rechelle competed in four Olympic Games, clinching three gold medals and securing a fifth-place finish in Barcelona. Her career reached a pinnacle at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, where she had the rare honour of reading the Olympic Athletes Oath on behalf of all athletes. The Hockeyroos’ flawless performance in Sydney, culminating in a gold medal, firmly established them as the greatest women’s hockey team in the sport’s history.
During our conversation, Rechelle shared how the Hockeyroos transitioned from the traditional ‘follow me / do as I say‘ leadership style, which she referred to as ‘hero leaders,’ to a more inclusive and empowering approach. This shift was pivotal in lifting the entire team, fostering a culture of collaboration and mutual support.
Rechelle’s leadership philosophy emphasises the importance of teamwork and staying focused on long-term goals. She believes that overcoming hurdles requires a collective effort and a shared vision, values that resonated deeply with me. Her experiences provide valuable lessons on the need for leaders to evolve and adapt, ensuring they uplift and empower their teams rather than simply directing them.
Since retiring from elite sports, Rechelle has diversified her expertise, working with various organisations to cultivate leaders and build high-performing teams. She brings a blend of practical experience, contemporary thinking, and innovative ideas to the realm of learning and development. Her work spans leadership, team development, and culture transformation, where she helps executives and teams foster collaboration and strive toward creating High Impact Integrated Teams.
Rechelle’s insights into collaborative-facilitated leadership, emotional and social dynamics, and the role of culture in team success are invaluable. She continues to guide leaders across various industries, helping them to embrace diversity, foster inclusive environments, and drive innovation within their organisations.
As a powerful and inspiring speaker, Rechelle’s message of teamwork, focus, and resilience has resonated with audiences from all walks of life. Her speeches and workshops on leadership, goal setting, and success have received commendations from top business leaders, further cementing her legacy as a thought leader in both sports and leadership.
I am excited to incorporate some of Rechelle’s experiences and insights into my Leadership Growth Program. Her emphasis on evolving leadership styles and fostering team collaboration aligns perfectly with the values I aim to instill in future leaders. Through this integration, I hope to inspire and equip leaders with the tools they need to build cohesive, high-performing teams that can achieve extraordinary results.
Thank you, Rechelle, for sharing your journey and wisdom. Your contributions to the field of leadership are truly inspiring, and I look forward to seeing the positive impact your insights will have on the next generation of leaders.
