Give Your Clients Independent Technology Advice Without Becoming Their Technology Expert
Technology problems rarely stay confined to the IT department.
A delayed software project can affect growth. Poor technology leadership can slow execution. Increasing development costs can damage margins. Dependence on one developer can create serious business risk.
You may recognise the business symptoms long before anyone identifies technology as the underlying problem.
That does not mean you need to become a technology expert.
I work alongside business consultants as an independent technology adviser and Fractional CTO, helping investigate the technology issues affecting their clients and turning technical problems into clear business decisions.
When It Makes Sense to Bring Me In
You might introduce me when a client is:
- Spending heavily on software development without seeing enough progress
- Struggling with a technology project that keeps missing deadlines
- Unsure whether their internal or outsourced technology team is performing well
- Too dependent on one developer, technical founder or technology provider
- Growing faster than their technology systems and processes can support
- Considering a major software, platform or technology investment
- Concerned that their CTO or technology leader is too focused on technical work
- Planning an acquisition, investment or business sale where technology risk matters
- Receiving conflicting technical advice and needing an independent view
- Trying to align technology priorities with a wider business strategy
Sometimes the issue is obvious. Often it is simply a feeling that technology is costing too much, taking too long or making the business harder to run than it should be.
That is usually a good point to have a conversation.
Technology Advice in Business Language
Your client does not need another technical report full of jargon.
They need to understand what is happening and what they should do about it.
My role is to translate technology issues into practical business questions:
What is the real problem?
How serious is it?
What is it costing the business?
What risks are being carried?
What should management do next?
That gives you and your client a clearer basis for making decisions without getting dragged into unnecessary technical detail.
Where I Can Support Your Client
Depending on the situation, I can provide a focused independent review or become involved for a longer period.
Technology Reviews
An independent assessment of technology leadership, software delivery, technology risk or a specific project.
This can help establish what is actually happening before the client commits more money or makes a significant decision.
Fractional CTO Support
Ongoing senior technology leadership for businesses that need experienced guidance but do not need, or are not ready for, a full-time CTO.
Software Project and Delivery Reviews
Independent assessment when a software project is late, over budget or failing to deliver the expected business value.
Technology Strategy
Helping leadership teams connect technology investment and priorities with the wider business strategy.
Technology Due Diligence
Independent technology assessment for acquisitions, investments, business sales and other transactions.
Technology Leadership and Governance
Helping businesses improve accountability, decision-making, priorities and visibility across their technology function.
I Complement Your Advice Rather Than Compete With It
A referral should strengthen your relationship with your client, not complicate it.
I stay focused on the technology issues you have brought me in to address. I am not looking to replace the business adviser, sell the client software or turn an introduction into an unrelated sales exercise.
Where appropriate, I can work directly with you, alongside the client leadership team, or independently and report my findings back in a form that supports your wider advisory work.
The aim is simple. Give everyone enough clarity to make a better decision.
Independent Advice Matters
Many people giving technology advice also have something to sell.
A software agency may recommend more development. An MSP may recommend infrastructure or managed services. A software vendor naturally believes its product is a good answer.
Those businesses can provide excellent services, but sometimes your client needs someone sitting on their side of the table.
I do not sell software, development teams, licences or managed IT services.
My role is to assess the situation independently and recommend what makes sense for the business.
A Useful Extension of Your Advisory Team
You do not need a technology specialist involved in every client engagement.
But having someone you can call when technology becomes important can expand the range of situations you can confidently help your clients navigate.
You retain your role as the trusted business adviser. I provide specialist technology expertise when it is needed.
Once the issue is understood, my involvement can finish there, continue as a defined project, or develop into ongoing Fractional CTO support if the client needs it.
Client Introductions Are Simple
You do not need to diagnose the technology problem before making an introduction.
If something does not look right, we can have a confidential conversation first.
Tell me what you are seeing, why you are concerned and what the client is trying to achieve. I can help determine whether there is a genuine technology issue and whether it makes sense for me to become involved.
Give Your Clients Clarity When Technology Becomes a Business Problem
When technology starts affecting growth, profitability, delivery or business risk, getting an independent view early can prevent a manageable problem becoming an expensive one.
If you have a client where something about their technology, software project or technology leadership does not feel right, you do not need to work out the answer yourself.
We can start with a confidential conversation about the situation and decide whether I can help.
